The Average AmericanSo it is clear that I am developing a deeper curiosity for understanding “who are they?” the consumer, the average Joe and the click. I came across this book I planned to get into months ago, The Average American. I love these facts from the NPR interview with the author, . It’s important to remember that there is a non-iPhone centric world outside the Bayosphere. How average are you? • Eats peanut butter at least once a week• Prefers smooth peanut butter over chunky• Can name all Three Stooges• Lives within a 20-minute drive of a Wal-Mart• Eats at McDonald’s at least once a year• Takes a shower for approximately 10.4 minutes a day• Never sings in the shower• Lives in a house, not an apartment or condominium• Has a home valued between $100,000 and $300,000• Has fired a gun• Is between 5 feet and 6 feet tall• Weighs 135 to 205 pounds• Is between the ages of 18 and 53• Believes gambling is an acceptable entertainment option• Grew up within 50 miles of current home

My recent move to the Civic Center has both offered an improved commute and view of the neighborhood then that offered by my Mission flat.  Concerned friends have all asked if I was aware of the area danger? My answer and rational has been that I was trading one kind of crazy for another. The Mission full of great nightlife and culture was a long and lonely walk to and from BART during my late evenings coming home from work. Not the best place to be strolling with a bag full of computers and gadgets. Taking the advice of a brave Hayes Valley friend, he reminded me that urban campers are not known for their speed and I should be able to outrun any threat - makes sense. After exploring many crime maps and reports it turns out my research proved right. In the Civic Center - I am statistically less likely to be a victim of a homicide, theft, vandalism, assault, sexual offense than my former neighborhood - well at least in the last 90 days? There is no doubt that this is drug central - I guess they go elsewhere to do there crime? Well this is only a three month stay and I certainly would not consider this area for an investment purchase - but good for now is best to describe it. Having access and contribution to this data via mashups and blogs has been most helpful to make an informed decision. Beyond that, the area has offered a upfront view into the history of the city. It is my urban obsession now to learn about these buildings around me that have left their soul behind for the future development of those pioneering investors of the future. A video about UC Berkley’s Hastings Law School Tower across from my place.

Peter FasanoThank you to Dan Greenfield for the kick in the pants to re-launch my blog after a one-year absence.

I will be writing about social media strategies - for better or worse … examining the agency, brands, corporations and media sources that originate them and the developing conversations/influences that impact them.

Your comments are always welcomed  - thanks for the visit.
